Susie Symes, 79, died peacefully in her sleep Wednesday, January 14, 2009 while in hospice care for a cerebral stroke.

Susie, daughter of Lena and Henry Boldt, Marion, SD, was born on November 17, 1929. After high school, Susie married Elwood Ayotte and moved to Sioux Falls, SD. Six children followed. The marriage ended in 1962.

Susie was remarried to Chuck Symes on June 5, 1970. They were blessed with ten grandchildren. Susie's grandson, Lucas and his wife Cassidy are expecting Grandma Susie's first great child on July 20, 2009.

Chuck and Susie joined the Abiding Saviors Lutheran Free Lutheran Church in 2001. After Chuck passed away in 2006, Susie began to attend Abiding Savior's sister church, the Living Word Free Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD.

Susie was a dear friend to many. She was a weary friend's sounding board, her children's confidante and her grandchildren's play date. She always had an open door and a cup of coffee ready, a shoulder to cry on and a small amount of money to lend. Her friendships lasted a life time. Even when visits stretched out over many years, she would renew her love for you in a heartbeat. An old friend said, "Who doesn't love Susie?" Another said, "I love her twinkling, smiling eyes." You could trust Susie with your heart, your secrets, your dreams and your fears. She'd lock them in her heart, encourage you, then wait in the wings for your next visit. She loved all of us. We all loved her.

Susie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Charles “Chuck” Symes; her sister, Helen Larsen; her daughter, Brenda Weeg; and an infant granddaughter, Leslie Ayotte.

Visitation will begin at 3 pm with the family present from 4 to 7 pm on Friday, January 16, 2009, at Miller Funeral Home, 13th & Main. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, January 17, 2009, at Abiding Savior Free Lutheran Church with burial; at Woodlawn Cemetery.
