DEATH CLAIMS T. OWEN BALDWIN
Pioneer in the wholesale grocery business and active Central United church worker, T. Owen Balwin, 61 years of age, died at his home, 534 Sixth avenue west, Friday morning. Born at Hartfield, Sussex, England, Mr. Baldwin came to Canada with his parents in 1885, settling in Hamilton, Ont. As a young man he entered the employ of James Turner & Company, wholesale grocers, and when the firm established a branch in Calgary in 1904, he came west as accountant for the branch, with the late L. T. Mewburn as manager. When the business was bought out by Mr. Mewburn in 1906, Mr. Baldwin became a member of the firm with the position of manager and held the position until 1929 when the business was sold out to the Western Grocers, Limited. For 30 years Mr. Baldwin had been an active member of Central United church and had been keenly interested in its work. In that period he had held various executive positions with the church, serving as treasurer, recording steward, missionary superintendent, president of the Men's Own Club and Sunday school teacher. The late Mr. Baldwin leaves his wife in Calgary and two sons, Arthur V., a graduate of the University of Toronto, now resident in Johnsonburg, Pa.; and Charles O., superintendent of the Philco radio company's factory at Toronto, and a brother and two sisters in Hamilton, Ont.
