J. P. "Bub" Miller, Jr., 81, Coleman, died Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at Coleman County Medical Center. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, March 10, 2006, at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Leonard Radde officiating and assisted by Dr. Jeffrey Miller. Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

J. P. "Bub" Miller, Jr. was born July 28, 1924, at the Rafter 3 Ranch in Coleman County, Texas, the son of J. P. "Jake" Miller, Sr. and Mary J. Jameson Miller. He grew up on the ranch in Coleman County and graduated from Coleman High School in 1941. He attended Texas A & M University.

During World War II, he was a United States Navy pilot, where he flew missions in the Pacific from the Bon Homm Richard. He was one of the pilots in the formation flying over during the signing of the peace treaty ending World War II.

On May 15, 1946, he married Patsy Jameson in Fort Worth, Texas. They moved to South Dakota in 1947, where he owned and operated Miller Ranch until 1972. They moved back to Coleman in 1972, so he could manage the Rafter 3 following the death of his father. He continued ranching in Coleman County until the time of his death.

Bub was a member of the South Dakota Stock Growers Association, Texas Cattle Raisers Association, and National Cattle Raisers Association. In October 2005, he was a recipient of the Foy Proctor Memorial Cowman's Award of Honor. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Coleman.

Survivors include his wife, Patsy Miller, Coleman; two sons, John P. Miller, Red Owl, and Tom C. Miller and wife Vivian, Red Owl; grandchildren, Thomas Ryan Miller, Jeff D. Miller and wife Ashley, Mary Catherine Miller, and Noelle Heinert; great-grandchild, Baxter Heinert; two sisters, Ann Hargett and husband James of Coleman and Billie Marie Miller of Coleman; and several nieces and nephews.

Family visitation was held on Thursday, from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
