Mary was the daughter of Shepherd McMechen and Alcinda Cockayne. Mary's father and younger brother died in 1874, and after that, Mary's mother devoted her life to her daughter. Mary graduated from Washington Female Seminary in Washington, Pa and married Clifford Stokes of Baltimore, Maryland. The couple were childless. Mary was a prominent social figure and an active member of the DAR in Baltimore.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary L. McMechen Stokes, wife of Clifford G. Stokes, who died yesterday at her home, 11 East Chase Street, will be held at 3 p.m. today in Christ Protestant Episcopal Church. The Rev. H.W.B. Donegan, rector of the church will conduct the services. Burial will be in Wheeling, W.Va., tomorrow.

Mrs. Stokes was born in Wheeling. She was the daughter of the late Shepherd McMechen. Her paternal grandfather, William McMechen, was one of the first settlers of the Ohio Valley. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
