Justus Jakob Goeppinger was born in Reutlingen, Wartemberg, Germany to Johann Christaph and Anna Barbara (Raach) Goeppinger and married Maria Magdalena Goeppinger on 28 Jan 1836 in Reutlingen, Germany. Maria was Justus's cousin and the daughter of Jakob Friedrich and Anna Maria (Reicherter) Goeppinger. Her brother, Johannes Sigmund (Find A Grave Memorial# 24074858) married Ursula Katherina Ammer. Sigmund and Ursula's sons, Louis (Find A Grave Memorial# 24074863) and Henry (FAGM # 23149933) were "famous" tanners in Boone County, Iowa.

Note: Although, author Suzanne Caswell lists brother, Louis, as the "eldest", he was actually the second oldest. Friedrich or "Frederick J Gappinger" (FAGM# 32466230) was the oldest son.

Justus and Magdalena lived and died in Newton Township, Trumbull County, Ohio. Justus was also a tanner. His tannery was located along the east side of Ridge Road (SR 534) across the Mahoning River and adjacent to the old Woolen Mill, according to the 1856 property map of Newton Falls, Ohio, with the name "J. Goeppinger" clearly shown. The Woolen Mill was located on the West Branch of the Mahoning at the dam and the tannery was sited about where the Giant Eagle grocery store currently occupies.

Justus and Magdalena had six children, three girls and three boys. Mary, born 1838; Christopher, born 3 Sep 1841; Magdalena, born 1844; Louisa, born 1846; Caleb (Find A Grave Memorial# 125702288), born 1848; and John Gustave, born 1851, North Jackson, Jackson Township, Mahoning County, Ohio.

With the exception of John Gustave, their other children were born in Reutlingen, Germany.

Justus taught his son, Christopher Fredrick, the tanner trade and in 1867 Christopher purchased a tanning operation from Martin Groetzinger or "Gretzinger" in Ravenna. Interestingly, Martin's wife was Magdalena Goeppinger, daughter of Johannes Sigmund and Ursula Katherina. Christopher and his wife, Maria Magdalena (Schauwecker) Goeppinger, issued six children and raised them in Ravenna, Ohio. I assume their graves are likely in Maple Grove Cemetery, Ravenna, Portage County, Ohio.

John Gustave (his name as it appears on his wedding licence application) married Hannah Hoeffinger 10 Jul 1873 in Trumbull County, Ohio and lived in Youngstown, Mahoning County (I think it was split from Trumbull County by then), Ohio where the couple issued nine children, and raised eight. By 1880, John worked as a clerk in a leather store in Youngstown.

John Gustave and Hannah's children were: Christopher J., first born (1874) died in Youngstown before 1880. His name does not appear in the 1880 and 1900 census data. Hannah is listed as bearing 9 children and in 1900 Census showed "8" living. Second born and following were Justus II (b.1875), Hattie (b.1879), Lenora Louise (b.27 Oct 1880), Mary (b.1883), John Jr. (b.1885), William Frederick (b.20 Jul 1890, d.23 Oct 1957, San Angelo, Tom Green County, TX), Carl H. (b.17 Mar 1893), and Florence (b.1896).

Lenora Louise married Henry John Miller (b.1870, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, OH) 30 Jun 1903 in Mahoning County, OH; Mary E. married R.H.W. Goeltz (b.1883, Sharon, Mercer County, PA). His parents were Charles and Henrietta (Hensbald) Goeltz; William Frederick married Frances Kathryn Adams (unknown date and location but probably TX). This couple issued three children: William Frederick "Fred" Jr. (b.05 Oct 1921, d.08 Sep 2009, Katy, Harris County, TX, Find a Grave Memorial #41801045), Florence, and Edward.

Fred Jr., Florence, and Edward Goeppinger are Justus and Magdalena's great grandchildren.

Hannah Goeppinger died likely in Youngstown between 1900 and 30 Aug 1903. She is probably buried in Warren, Ohio next to her husband's grave although she died first.

John Gustave remarried 1 Sep 1903 to Minerva Alice Hutson (b.1872, Alliance, Stark County, Ohio) in Mahoning County, Ohio. Her maiden name could perhaps be "Hudson".

John Gustave died 28 Apr 1918 in Youngstown, and his death certificate lists "Warren", OH as the place of his burial but no cemetery is named.
