She was baptized at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, St. Genevieve, Louisiana Territory, on Aug 6, 1806. This document states she was born on August 4, 1806.
Her father, Oliver Reed, was murdered in his bed by a neighbor when she was only 11 months old. Her mother, who was also injured in this attack, later married Ralph Lee in 1811 when Eliza was 4 and a half.
Before she was full grown, Eliza's mother had died and her step-father had left for parts unknown. When she was 17, her then guardian, William Berry, gave written permission for her to marry Isaiah Nichols, a 24 year old who had been born in Kentucky. Isaiah and Eliza had eight known children who lived to adulthood.
They resided in Fayette County, IL for at least 25 years, but 1860 found them in Franklin County, Kansas.
At some time they must have returned to Illinois, for there is a grand memorial standing in the Welch Cemetery for them.
