Henry Garrett Smith

Henry Garrett Smith, 82, of Goode, Va., died on Friday, September 12, 2014. He was the husband of Carol Lee Lipscomb Smith.

Henry was born December 9, 1931, in Bedford, Va., a son of the late Kester Smith and the late Mary Lucy Parker Smith. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was retired from Rubatex Corp. where he worked for twenty-six years and was a member of New Beginning Tabernacle in Madison Heights and #715 Moose Lodge in Lynchburg.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Regina Knight and friend, David, of Bedford; one son, Jeffrey Smith of Hawaii; six stepchildren, Luther Brown and wife, Lisa, of Lynchburg, Thomas Brown and wife, Barbara, of Lynchburg, Vanessa Brown Morris of Bedford, Gary Brown of Lynchburg, Stacey Burner and husband, Cliff of Lynchburg, and Charles Brown and wife, Cathi of Madison Heights; two sisters, Virginia Lowe of Buena Vista and Annie Mayhew of Huddleston; three grandchildren, thirteen step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Henry was predeceased by his first wife, Helen Smith; one daughter, Vickie Turner; one stepdaughter, Kellie Brown; and two brothers, Richard Smith and Bobby Smith.

A funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Sunday, September 14, 2014, at Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg with the Rev. Gary Moore officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will take place at 1 p.m. Monday, September 15, 2014, at Virginia Memorial Park with Military Honors conducted by Altavista American Legion, Memorial Post #36. A reception will follow at #715 Moose Lodge.
