Enlisted as Private in Company A, 114th Regiment, Virginia Militia on July 14, 1861 at Romney, Virginia. He volunteered for duty on April 3, 1862 and served to April 8, 1862. He later enlisted as a Corporal in Company E, 41st Battalion, Virginia Cavalry on September 22, 1862 at Cold Springs, Virginia. He was arrested by a member of the 54th Pennsylvania Infantry, USA in Hampshire County, Virginia on January 22, 1864. He was initially confined in Military Prison at Wheeling, Virginia, later transferred to Camp Chase and then transferred to Fort Delaware, Delaware. He was transferred to Aiken's Landing, Virginia for exchange on September 30, 1864. He was later admitted to Chimborazo Hospital No. 3 in Richmond, Virginia on October 7, 1864. He received a passport on October 14, 1864 and was furloughed on October 15, 1864 for 45 days. No further records of his military service were found.
