John was born in Union County, NC, to John William Brown, III, and Christine Brooks Brown-Jeffers. He died in Mecklenburg County, NC, at the University Hospital in Charlotte.
He attended the Winchester Avenue High School, graduating as Salutatorian of his class.
He was a 1960 graduate of North Carolina College in Durham, NC, majoring in Biological Sciences. During his college years, he was a member of the N. C. College Choir.
A "son of educators" he would continue this tradition of teaching in Eastern North Carolina, Mecklenburg and Union County Schools.
He loved all people and was active in a number of community and civic organizations including: The Winchester Alumni Association (and the Neighborhood Association); N. C. Central University Alumni; Urban League of Charlotte, NC; Afro-American Cultural Center; …Black Caucus of Union County (and Mecklenburg's Black Political Caucus), and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
He lived a full and active life of singing, attending recitals and Kappa Alpha Psi Regional and National meetings.
Survivors included two Aunts, Bertha Brooks Perry and Vernelle Dade. Cousins, Wilma Rosalie Little, Theodore A. Little, Jr., Alyce Poe Byrd, Karen Forgy Hicks plus other cousins, friends and students. (more names of friends were listed within the obituary)
Long & Son Mortuary Service was in charge of arrangements. His funeral was held at Mt. Calvary AME Zion of Monroe, NC.
