Martin was always an avid reader of obituaries, so it is incumbent upon us to get this one right. One thing he insisted upon was that we were not to say that he loved his children. He held that particular truth to be self-evident - and it was. His quiet unobtrusive love of his children and grand-children was a given in their lives. Always there for them - with a hand up or a hand out, - never critical, just pure unconditional love.
Martin, who was born January 23rd 1932, to Mabel Martin and the Rev. John Rose of St. Stephen NB, grew up under the shadow of the Second World War.
Just too young to have seen active service, he developed a fascination for the events of that era - still buying books on the subject the day before his death. They will remain unread.
Always the traveler, he died in Chester UK, on August 23rd, with a rail pass and an airline ticket in his pocket, and his hiking boots at the side of his bed. That he had sparked an interest in travel in his children and grand-children he regarded as a job well done.
While we mourn a gentle, loving, generous man, we are also grateful that the Alzheimer's Disease that was slowly crippling his mind did not run its full course. He died loving and knowing he was loved.
Martin will be greatly missed by wife, Connie, and children, Peter (Kathy), Mary Ann (Scott Freeth) and David (Amanda), and grand-children Jodi and Sara Gallinger (Ottawa), Nicole and Richard Rose (Calgary) and little Alexander Rose (Victoria).
Martin’s family will receive friends at Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst, NS (902-667-9906) on Sunday, September 7, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral service will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. at Trinity St. Stephen’s United Church, Amherst.
A private interment will take place at a later date in the Stewartdale Cemetery, Cape Breton, NS.
