Bellevue - Earl W. Best, 84, of Bellevue died at 7:40 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Born April 15, 1921, in Vonore, Tenn., to Andrew and Mamie Blair Best, he married Ruby L. Isbill on Nov. 26, 1945, in Chatsworth, Ga. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Shirley Best of East Peoria; one son, Charles (and Diane) of Peoria; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

A member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3883 in Bartonville, he was a World War II Army veteran, serving as a heavy machine gunner from April 7, 1941, to Aug. 26, 1945. He served 585 days of combat duty, in battles in the Eastern European Theater, Tunisia, Po Valley, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno and North Appenines. When he returned from the war, he served in the Illinois Army National Guard from 1949 to 1950.

He was a stores controller at Caterpillar Inc. for 31 years, retiring in 1980.

He was a member of Local 974 and the Civilian Conservation Corps in California from 1939-1941.

He was a member of Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Edwards, where he was a senior deacon and taught Sunday school for many years.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at his church. The Rev. Albert Decker will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria and 30 minutes before services at the church. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Peoria, where military honors will be accorded.

Memorials may be made to his church or to Parkinson's Disease Research.
