Andrew Jackson (Jack) Airheart, Jr., 90, of Roanoke, Va. died at his home surrounded by his family on Monday, August 11, 2014 following a brief illness.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Jackson Airheart and Posye Burgess Airheart and his half sisters, Madolyn Airheart Ould and Hazel Airheart Jamison.

Jack was born and raised in Roanoke and a graduate of Augusta Military Academy (high school) and Virginia Tech (Mechanical Engineering degree). He served in World War II in the United States Air Force. He retired from General Electric in Salem, Va. following a 30 year career as a Manufacturing Engineer in GE's Drive Systems Department.

Jack was a long time, active member of Second Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon, an Elder, a Sunday School teacher and an avid participant of Bible study. His church family was indeed his second family. He was a member of the Order of St. Luke. Jack believed in giving back to his community and was an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels, the Presbyterian Community Center and RAM House. Jack's most important role in his life was being a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

His surviving family includes the love of his life, Sara Stonesifer Airheart to whom he was married to for nearly 64 years, daughter S. Rebecca (Becky) Airheart of Columbia, SC, son and daughter-in-law Andrew Michael (Mike) and Susan C. Airheart of Charlotte, NC, daughter and son-in-law Mary A. and Robert B. Brown of Roanoke, Va.; granchildren Peter C. (Sarah M.) Airheart, Caitlin A. (Andrew M.) Zancanaro both of Charlotte, NC and Jacob B. Brown of Roanoke, Va.; great grandchildren Robert Kohen Redmond and Frances Eleanor Zancanaro both of Charlotte, NC.

The family would like to express a sincere thanks to Good Samaritan Hospice for their brief but compassionate care of Jack.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 14, 2014 at Second Presbyterian Church, 214 Mountain Avenue SW, Roanoke, Va. with a reception to immediately follow the service. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 13, 2014 between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, 318 W. Church Avenue, Roanoke, Va.

Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Community Center, 1228 Jamison Avenue, SE, Roanoke, Va., 24013, Second Presbyterian Church or a charity of your choice.
