Etta had been previously married to Whit Sumner in North Carolina, September 16, 1892.

She had four children by 1900 with Whit, one having died. Rufus, Laura and Bertha. Newspapers show that starting about 1907, Whit and Etta began selling their property in North Carolina. There was some suggestion that they may have moved to Texas where Whit was killed. Bertha it is believed is listed on the 1910 census in Bexas, Texas living with a single woman as a servant at the age of 10.

Etta had developed tuberculosis by this time and she came to Arizona.

She was married to William Wyatt Edwards on December 20, 1910. She had given birth to twin daughters on December 19, 1910. Etta died shortly after of tuberculosis.

Her one daughter, Laura Vina Edwards, was adopted by William and Francisca Roberts of Phoenix. Her birth record was initially without a first name until amended with the name provided. She took the Roberts surname.

The second twin appears to have died at birth when reading the birth certificate. Etta had been the mother of 6 children according to the birth certificate.
