Third wife of John H. Stoneking. Buried in an unmarked grave.

Daughter of John Lemmon and Catherine Scott (Thanks to Lance D. Gill, #46806044)Catherine was born around 1827 in Greene County Pennsylvania. She first married Daniel Evans,
Daniel Evans died sometime before Sep 1863, when letters of administration were issued in his estate. He died intestate (without a will) owning real estate in Aleppo Twp., Greene Co., PA. To resolve his estate, his son, Daniel Evans Jr. commenced an action in Greene Co. to partition his land so his heirs would receive their share of his estate. According to the partition complaint, Daniel left a widow and nineteen children. As named therein, the heirs were:

Catherine Evans -- widow
Daniel Evans -- adult son living in Greene Co.
Elizabeth Evans, adult daughter, wife of John Lemmon (brother of Daniel's widow, Catherine) living in Greene Co.
Susannah Evans, adult daughter, wife of Elias Mackey living in Greene Co.
George Evans, adult son living in Greene Co.
Hannah Evans, adult daughter living in Greene Co.
Margaret Evans, adult daughter, wife of James Campsey, living in Washington Co., PA
Jacob Evans, adult son living in Cass Co., IN
Jeremiah Evans, adult son living in Cass Co., IN
Jesse Evans, adult son living in Appanoose Co., IA
Samuel Evans, adult son living in Marshall Co., VA (WV)
Rachel Evans, adult daughter, wife of John Murphy living in Marshall Co., VA (WV)
Ann Evans, adult daughter, wife of Gaines Jackson living in Ohio Co., VA (WV)
Thomas Evans, adult son, deceased, leaving heirs: Benjamin and Thomas
Thomas Jefferson Evans, minor son
James K. Evans, minor son
Eliza C. Evans, minor daughter
Sarah Jane Evans, minor daughter
John L. Evans, minor son
William L. Evans, minor son
(The above minors based on guardianship and death records were the children of Daniel and Catherine, his widow.)
Per the partition judgment, Catherine, his widow, was to be paid her dower interest in one third of the real property for her natural life. This was apparently true even if she remarried. Throughout the estate admininstration, Catherine received various payments for her interest. Sometime in 1870-1, Catherine married John H. Stoneking. This is evidenced by a receipt signed by John and Catherine, as the former widow of Daniel Evans. John and Catherine had a son Elsworth Stoneking who died in 1887 and is buried in Wetzel Co., WV, where John and Catherine settled after their marriage. Catherine's daughter Eliza, who became the wife of Thomas Hudson, also settled in Wetzel Co.

Catherine, John and Elsworth Stoneking are buried in Mount Herman Cemetery, Uniontown, Wetzel Co., WV. Eliza and Thomas Hudson are also buried there. Quite incorrectly, researchers on John Stoneking have adopted the belief that his wife Catherine was Catherine Coen. This is not true as can be clearly seen from the above evidence. (Catherine Coen actually married George Cain and died as Catherine Cain in 1914 in Wetzel Co., WV).

It is possible that after John H. Stoneking's death, Catherine may have married Aaron J. Haines in 1892 in Wetzel Co. However, the record stating her place of birth contradicts the truth that she was born in PA.

No WV death record has been located for Catherine. However, she signed her last receipt in 1891. Documents from the estate of Daniel Evans estate indicated that Catherine was dead by 1897 so that her dower payments could be terminated.
