James married Devina Douglass Martin on 23 June 1876 and around 1885, he traveled with his wife and children to the US arriving in either Pennsylvania or New York. James later took up residence in New York for about 10 or 15 years before moving to Fairmont, Marion County, West Virginia before 1910, living on Ridley Ave and then at 1108 Lowell Street. In 1911, James' occupation is noted as an evangelist, he worked as a minister for the remainder of his life.
