Daniel L. Moser was born in Frederick County, Maryland, the son of Leonard & Lydia Anne "Nancy" (Woolford or Wolfart) Moser. In 1860, he was a farmer living in Frederick County, Maryland, and stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes. He was said to possess "a yellow complexion," a description usually reserved for light-skinned black men.
He enlisted in Frederick County August 16, 1862, and mustered into federal service August 20 with Co. B, 7th Maryland Infantry, at the rank of private. Honorably discharged with his company on May 31, 1865.
He moved to the Opequon District, Berkeley County, West Virginia, and married Mary Catherine Inger c. 1875. Their only child (or only surviving child) was William Elmer (b. 06/06/76). He died in Martinsburg May 12, 1907.
