Sophia is a daughter of Leonard McIntyre and Olive (Potter) McIntyre. Her sister Sally died when she was six years old leaving her the only girl in a family of five boys. Sophia appears in the 1850 US Federal Census, 1860 US Federal Census, and 1865 NY State Census records with her parents Leonard and Olive in Farmersville Township, town of Elton, Cattaraugus County, NY. As with all growing areas of the country in the early 1800's townships expanded and adjusted. Yorkshire, Freedom and Farmersville Townships tended to overlap in every Census. Sophia married George Adelbert Bassett on 16 April 1857 in Elton, Farmersville Township, Cattaraugus County, New York.
To Sophia and George were born seven known children. Their first two children, Ellen Jane 1859- and Frank Edward 1862- were both born in Cattaraugus County and the following children came in Erie PA and then Michigan.
