According to 1880 Indiana census records, Robert was a farmer and day laborer. He joined the Civil War in 1861. He enlisted for 3 years as a private in Co. E of the 24th Regiment Infantry of the Indiana Volunteers. Robert was slightly wounded at Champion Hill on May 16, 1863. His casualty sheet does not provide any details. He was honorably discharged in July of 1864 at Baton Rouge when his term expired.

According to The Boonville Enquirer dated 31 Mar 1870 page 2 - Robert S Barrett of Logan township, Pike county, has been muchly married. He was married to his third wife on the 14th inst. All three of his wives are living in that county, he having been divorced from his two first.
In the 1870 census, Robert was living with his third wife Margaret and son Riley. His second wife, Indiana along with their children Matilda and Elijah were 2 houses away living with her mother Christena Hayden and step-father. Margaret Jane Willis along with Silas were living in Madison Twp., Pike County, Indiana. Silas was listed as Willis but he was the right age. [Lisa Alexander - 48667469]
