In 1963, he moved with his family to Richmond and lived there for 20 years until moving to Florida in 1983. From then until 2006, he and his wife, Joan, lived at various times in either Florida or Indiana. In 2006 they moved back to live in Centerville and lived there until moving to Friends Fellowship Community in 2011.
Charles worked for the Indiana State Highway Department for 13 years and then worked in Richmond for Magaw Construction Inc. until around 1980 when he left his position as Vice President to start Stone Valley Paving where he was President. He retired from there in 1983.
During this time, he, along with a friend, developed the subdivision commonly known as ‘The Toschlog Addition’ on the west side of Richmond under the official business name of T&C Developments.
Charles served in the US Army in the Engineers branch from 1951 to 1953 when he was honorably discharged. During his time in the Army, he was posted in Panama and Greenland and received special training in amphibian engineering, operating landing boats.
Charles was a Masonic Lodge Past Master, a lifetime member Indiana Valley of Scottish Rite, a Mentor for the Masonic Lodge, and a member of the Past Masters’ Association.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joan, his daughter, Linda Burbridge (Ian), granddaughters, Emma Waller (Paul) and Kate Stevens (Dominic), great grandson, Robin James Waller and several nieces and nephews.
His brothers, Edward, Bob and Norman and their wives, as well as his parents are deceased. His sons, John and Charles (Sonny) are also deceased (1983 and 1987 respectively).
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, September 5, 2014 in the Community Room at Friends Fellowship Community, 2030 Chester Blvd, Richmond, IN 47374. A private interment of ashes at Earlham Cemetery will be at a future date. Stegall-Berheide-Orr funeral is handling arrangements.
