Barbara Gwladys Keen Newnom, 83, of Palm Desert, California, passed away on July 30, 2014, in Thousand Palms, California, of heart failure. Barbara was born on June 26, 1931, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, to Freda Pearl Dingwell of Prince Edward Island, Canada. She was adopted and raised by John and Gladys Roberts Keen in Montreal. As a young girl , she was a minority English speaker in French - speaking schools. At the age of 19, Barbara and three girlfriends embarked on a six month vacation to Pasadena, Ca; shortly thereafter, she met and married Richard Newnom - together, they raised four children and enjoyed many friendships.
Barbara was a working mom and believed it was important to be independent. At age 44 , she earned a college degree. She worked for a time with Vietnamese refugees. Barbara loved socializing, travel, and dancing.

She is survived by sons Steven R. Newnom of Paradise, CA , and Jeffery G. Newnom of Weed, CA, and by daughters Corinne G. Newnom Henley of Chino Hills, CA , and Cathleen B. Newnom Leach of Orland, CA . She is also survived by twelve grandchildren: Grant and Sherry Newnom; Chad, Scott, and Julie Henley; and Brittany Hibdon, Lauren Orcutt, and Brian, John, Nick, Delaney, and Melissa Leach . She leaves behind seven great - grandchildren as well - Sadie and Lily Newnom, Elijah and Benjamin Henley, Lucy Orcutt, and Houston and Westley Hibdon - as well as special friend Jim Bradley. She was predeceased by her half-brother Donald C. Fraser of Prince Edward Island, Canada.
