Emma was the daughter of Jacob Sheller and Lydia Hake Sheller (Lydia's name is shown with the spelling Scheller in the 1880 Labette County Census. The 1860 Yellow Springs, Greene County Ohio census lists:

Emma married William H. Rutherford October 11, 1880 in Labette County, Kansas. Both William and Emma had lost their fathers as young children. William had married twice before he met Emma and had a child from his 2nd marriage. They raised that child, Laura, and 9 more. Their last 2 children were twins: George Matthew and William Dana. William Dana named his first son, William Lee. Inside of William Lee's baby book is a slip of paper listing additional visitors to see the new baby. "Grandma Rutherford" is named there. The date was September 1924. No record has been found of her date/location of death. William Hugh had died recently in 1923. Likely they are both buried in Fawn Creek Township perhaps in nearby Dearing, Kansas.
