Jacob was the son of Samuel Claar & Lydia Stropes.

He married three times:
(1) Sarah Ervin (Irvin, Irwin) on 9 May 1851 in Jackson Co., OH
(2) Catherine P. Auld Lidey on 3 Feb 1878 in Watson, Effingham Co., IL
(3) Rosa Williamson on 8 Jun 1902 in Effingham Co., IL

Jacob and Sarah's children were: Adaline Josephine (LeCrone); Ella (Schooley); Walker Bennett; Flora Belle (LeCrone); Sanford M.; John Watson; & Nora May (Couch).

Jacob's obituary in the Effingham Democrat states that he was born in Ohio and came to Effingham County 48 years ago and resided "in and near" Watson all of the 48 years. The obituary includes: "His three sons, Walker, J. W. and Sanford all reside in the county. Mrs. Flora LeCrone and Mrs. Nora Couch, daughters, live in Helena, Oklahoma. One bother, Wm. Claar, lives in Jackson, Ohio, and a sister, Mrs. Emily Hughes, in Ohio."

Note that daughters Adaline Josephine (LeCrone) and Ella (Schooley) preceded him in death.

Note also that his gravestone shows he was born in 1825.
