Gloria Jean Gilbert, one of two daughters of Russell Roy and Imogene Lois (Kinney) Forbus, was born on July 17, 1941 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She grew up and attended school in Carson, Iowa where she was active in music and cheerleading and was also involved with 4-H. She graduated from Carson-Macedonia High School in 1959; the first class to graduate from the newly organized Carson-Macedonia School District. Following school, Gloria worked at Mutual of Omaha. She attended nursing school and worked at Oakland Manor in Oakland, Iowa, and also provided in-home health care in the area.

Gloria and Ronald Leslie Gilbert were married on June 6, 1964 at The Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home in Carson and their marriage was blessed with two sons, Steve Russell and Randall Leslie. In 1975, the family moved to Waldhof, Ontario, Canada where Ron worked as a salesman for a food wholesale company and later as a security guard for the Great Lake Paper Company. In 1987, Ron and Gloria purchased the Waldhof Bay Lodge on Eagle Lake and operated the fishing resort until 1992. They then moved to Macedonia, Iowa.

Gloria and Ron were married 35 years when Ron died of cancer on May 8, 2000 at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs. Gloria continued to make her home in Macedonia. She was a member of the Wheeler Grove United Church of Christ. Gloria worked at Oakland Heights, an assisted living area of Oakland Manor, and cleaned the Oakland United Church of Christ, the Macedonia United Methodist Church and Wheeler Grove United Church of Christ.
