"Guilford set out to visit his son [Guilford Dudley, Jr., 1864-1935], who lived at Richardson's Mill near Mt. Croghan, on Deep Creek. He died in a pasture on the way there. When he did not return home, a search was made for him and that is where they found him. He had been dead for quite awhile and the animals had been at him, so he was buried where they found him. (South Carolina Department of Archives & History, Coroner’s Book of Inquests, Chesterfield County). Catherine is bur in Cross Roads Church Cemetery, but there is no marker."
Above is from an unpublished typescript, "William Hood Gulledge of Anson County, North Carolina and his Descendants" by Marie Gulledge Wiggins.
I heard the story of Guilford being found dead in the pasture many times as a child. Mother (Marie) found the coroner's record after she began researching the family. Mother never told me exactly where the grave was located, just that it was "out in the woods" somewhere between Richardson's Mill on Deep Creek and his own home near his brothers, Edward, Sebern, and Riley. She recalled no marker - I don't think she ever knew the exact location.
