OBITUARY OF JAMES WINFREY

James Warren Winfrey was born in a log cabin six miles southest of Carrollton, Mo., Nov. 21, 1885, and passed away at Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital jan. 17, 1962, at the age of 86 years, 1 month and 27 days.

James was the oldest son of John Robinson Winfrey and Annetta Hardwick Winfrey.

In 1898 James moved with his parents to Cedar County, Mo., but they went back to Carroll County in 1900.

In 1902, when Mr. Winfrey was 17 years of age, he was baptized into the fellowship of the Wakenda Baptist Church, which is only about one mile from where he was born.

Mr. Winfrey received most of his grammar school education in Carroll County and attended one semester at William Jewell College at Liberty, Mo., in 1904.

In 1905 Mr. Winfrey moved to Atwood, Kan., with his parents, three brothers and two sisters. Another sister was born there the following year.

James worked around Atwood until 1907 when he filed a claim on a homestead which was part of Yuma County, Colo., until June 1910, when it was transferred to Kit Carson County.

Mr. Winfrey was united in marriage to Jessie Mae Biggs on Oct. 31, 1908. Nine children were born to this union, all of whom are still living.

The Winfreys lived in a small sod house on the homestead until 1915 when they built a new frame house. They moved into this house on Mr. Winfrey's 30th birthday, Nov. 21, 1915, and continued to live in this house until all the children were grown. They sold the farm and moved to Burlington in 1954.

Mr. Winfrey was one of the founders of the Liberty Baptist Church which was organized in 1916. He was always the song leader and usually the Sunday school superintendent. He also helped organize and build the First Baptist Church of Burlington which he attended faithfully the rest of his life.

Mr. Winfrey is survived by his wife, Jessie Mae and 65 descendants including six sons: James C. of Kansas City, Mo.; Everett L. of Gadsen, Ala.; Virgil E. of Yates Center, Kan.; Irvin O. and Raymond A. of Des Moines, Iowa; and Floyd D. of Independence, Mo. Three daughters, Mrs. Leonard (Iva) Barnhart of Denver, Mrs. Wade (Mabel) Davis and Mrs. Reuben (Lola) Rhoades of Burlington; 32 great grandchildren. He also leaves one brother, Ed Winfrey of Burlington and three sisters, Mrs. Grace Rice of Pueblo, Mrs. Ralph Crews of Wray and Mrs. George F. Smith of Van Nuys, Calif.

Funeral services for Mr. Winfrey were held Jan. 20 at the First Baptist Church in Burlington with his son, the Rev. Everett Winfrey of Alabama and the Rev. James Crow officiating.

Song selections, "I Won't Have To Cross Jordan Alone" and "The Old Rugged Cross," were sung by Bertha Schmidt and Milton Sharp accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Sharp.

Casket bearers were his grandsons. Interment was made in the Fairview Cemetery, Burlington.
