City Musician, Saddle-Maker, Dies at Age 91
A pioneer Calgary musician and custom saddle-maker, Victor Henry Biner, 91, died here at the weekend.
Born in Randa, Switzerland, Mr. Biner moved with his family to Miles City, Montana, in 1883. He later moved to Boulder, Montana, to study harness-making and came to Calgary in 1900 as a custom saddle-maker for Riley and McCormick.
Between 1901 and 1919 he worked for both Riley and McCormick and Great West Saddlery.
Mr. Biner became a charter member of the musicians' union in 1906, and played for the Calgary Fire Brigade Band, the 14th Light Horse Band and the Calgary Citizens Band.
Between 1919 and 1942 he resided in California and British Columbia, and then returned to Calgary to work for Riley and McCormick until his retirement at age 80.
Mr. Biner is survived by a daughter, Mary of Calgary, and a son, Albert Biner of Vancouver.
