James A. Goodbar married Leann Cope on 9 June 1869 at Overton County, Tennessee. She preceded him in death in 1895.

James A. Goodbar married Cora Jane Henson on 21 December 1896 at Jacksboro, Texas. Seven children were born to this union.

J.A. Goodbar came from Illinois to Mineral Wells in 1884 for their health and finding it, remained in this area. They took mineral baths in a tent, with G.P. Barber who owned the place. The couple bought a place three miles west of Mineral Wells and lived there with their two sons - Fayette, who was born here, and J.W. Goodbar. His first wife preceded him in death.

The log room built by J.A. Goodbar on his arrival is still a part of the living quarters for his second wife after his death.
