Mr. Alston was born in Scotland and came to Pittsburgh as a boy, where he attended elementary school. He apprenticed in the stone cutting trade, and studied architecture and drafting with the aid of J. W. Kerr, the first architect of Pittsburgh. He worked as a carpenter and millwright from 1865-1877, then became a contractor, and eventually an architect. One of his commissions was the Buena Vista Street Methodist Episcopal Church. He was a charter member of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and was elected a Fellow of the Institute in 1891.
On January 13, 1848, he was married to Mary Lemon, who bore him 8 children, 2 of whom died in childhood, including William and James (twins), Archibald, John, Charles, and daughter Mary, who took after her father upon her mother's death in March of 1875.
(Above bio from the Quarterly Bulletin of the American Institute of Architects, thanks to Findagrave member Catherine Cramer.)
According to his death certificate, he was the son of Agnes Menzie and William Alston (both of Scotland). He was a widower, died of grippe and was buried in Uniondale Apr 20, 1910.
