Mardella E. Conover
October 30, 1928 - August 29, 2014

Some people don’t just live a life – they illuminate it – and many lives are shining brightly for having known Mardi Conover. On August 29, 2014 she joined her Lord Jesus Christ and her beloved husband Bruce after a long illness that she endured with unwavering strength and grace. Her family is left to cherish her beautiful smile that never failed to light up a room and wonderful memories of a life filled with faith, love and laughter.

Mardella E. Mirr was born the third of 10 children to the late Leo S. Mirr and Adeline Beller on October 30, 1928 in Humphrey, Nebraska. Although she would become a sophisticated world traveler, Mardi never lost the practicality and common sense of that Nebraska farm girl. Elegance, integrity and compassion combined with a strong work ethic made for a formidable role model and she touched everyone in her life with a positive energy that was all about giving thanks to God, appreciating what you have and paying it forward.

Mardi grew up in Rock Island, Illinois and graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic High School. Not long after, she met and married the love of her life, Charles Bruce Conover who had just come home from World War II. Their partnership was a perfect love story that spanned 65 years and taught their 4 children what respect and unconditional love is all about. With an impressive mind for finance, Mardi could have launched her own company, but she wanted nothing more than to devote her life to her family and country – proud to serve alongside her husband as he embarked on an Air Force career. From Morocco to Hawaii with stateside assignments in between, she showed by example everything that makes a military wife a special breed and seized the opportunity to serve her country without hesitation. The deep friendships made along the way were treasured by Mardi who enjoyed every minute of such a rewarding life.

Involved in numerous leadership roles within Air Force organizations, she was especially proud to serve the American Red Cross as a volunteer. She served as the Director of the Red Cross at Bergstrom AFB and was instrumental in bringing a refugee family from Vietnam to Austin. She always believed in the promise of a new day and the goodness in people.

In 1984, Mardi and Bruce moved to Onion Creek and enjoyed a golden retirement in that community with many of their retired military friends and friends at Santa Cruz Catholic Church. Although health issues arose from time to time, Mardi always focused on the positives. She enjoyed her family and friends with great energy and was especially proud of her 8 grandchildren. Her great-grandchildren were icing on the cake!

The epitome of all that is right with the Greatest Generation, Mardi left behind a legacy of integrity, love and faith. Not only faith in God – but faith in each other. We are forever better for having known her.

In addition to her parents, Mardi was preceded in death by her husband Bruce Conover, sister, Ilene Kennedy and brother, Ivan Mirr. She is survived by her children Marla Tatum (James), Gregory Conover (Joan), Laurie Jensen (Richard) and Holly Coe (Gary); grandchildren Jennifer Holmes (Christian), Mark Jensen (Cynthia), Jamie Tatum (Laura), Amanda Jensen, Josh Conover, Christina Conover, Tyler Coe, and Mitchell Coe; great-grandchildren Landen Jensen and Evelyn, Emma and Mia Holmes; and step great-grandchildren Des’ree Flores and Isaiah Lastra-Gonzales. Brothers Marvin Mirr and Dale Mirr and sisters Anita Kane, Janet Robinson, Kathleen Manion, Carol Hoover and Betty Dies; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews also survive her.

The Conover family would like to extend their deep appreciation and thanks to Hospice Austin for their excellent care of Mardi and a very special thank you to Brenda Perez to whom we will be forever grateful for her loving care, concern and compassion for Mardi these last several years.

There will be a visitation on Thursday, September 4, 2014 from 6 – 7:30 P.M. with a rosary at 7:30 P.M. at Harrell Funeral Home on Frontier Trail. The service will be at Santa Cruz Catholic Church in Buda at 2 P.M. on Friday September 5, 2014. A graveside service will take place on Monday, September 8, 2014 at 1:30 P.M. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hospice Austin or the American Red Cross.
