Robert Kirkwood Belt, Jr. passed away peacefully at home on August 21, 2014 after a four month illness with Ideopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.
He was born in Evanston, Illinois on July 11, 1929.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma Patricia Belt, brother William P. Belt (Virginia), son Scott Gildenmeister (Cynthia), daughter Laura Trujillo, four grandchildren, Hannah Patricia, Taylor Noel, Jefferson Kirkwood and Cooper William, and his beloved dog Andre.
He went to Lake Forest Academy and then attended Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. The four years at Kenyon College were one of the most joyous times of his life. In 1951 after graduation from Kenyon, his family moved from Chicago, Illinois to Skull Valley, Arizona, where they bought a ranch. Bob joined the Army and served in the Counter Intelligence Corp in Germany for four years, making more new friends all of whom he has kept in touch with along with his Kenyon buddies. He worked for the Valley National Bank of Arizona for 31 years taking early retirement when he was 55 and then he and his wife traveled extensively. He was an avid runner and ran 55 marathons, the last one taking place in Paris. He said it was a great way to see the city. He loved Arizona with its trails, and back roads, and used to hike a lot. He was a great storyteller - he could remember events from many years ago and kept his listeners entranced.
Services will be held at Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary, 8555 E. Pinnacle Peak Road, Scottsdale, on Friday, August 29, 2014 at 11:00 a.m.
The family wishes to thank Hospice of the Valley for their continuous support and comfort during Bob's final weeks. Donations can be made if wished to Hospice of the Valley , 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014.
