Mr. Batts was chief of the La Center Police Department, serving 34 years. He initiated and was the first instructor for the DARE (Drug Awareness and Resistance Education) program for Ballard County schools.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Batts was a graduate of the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Police Academy. He was a member of First Baptist Church of La Center.

He is survived by his mother, Virginia Batts; three sons, Roy Tildand Batts Jr., Darrell and Carey Batts; two brothers, James R. and Bobby G. Batts; a sister, Sharren K. Farris; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Roy Batts; and a brother.
