Elmira, daughter of George Perry and Catherine Brown Perry, married DeForest Hilts (1866-1908) on Dec. 24, 1884 when she was 17 years of age and he was 18.

DeForest and Elmira had three daughters: Ella Caroline (1885-1977), Edith May (1890-1962), and Hazel Melvina (1901-1986). Of the three daughters, Ella never married; she lived in the home with Elmira. Hazel, inherited the home next door from her grandmother, Henrietta, DeForest's mother.

She was born in Peapack, NJ. She was widowed at age 41 years.

Elmira was a member of the Stanhope Methodist Episcopalian Church in Stanhope, NJ.

Elmira's obituary read:
"Mrs. DeForest Hilts
Netcong - Mrs. Elmira Hilts, widow of DeForest Hilts, died yesterday at her home in Hilts Lane. She was born in Peapack 82 years ago and had lived here 70 years. Mrs. Hilts was a member of the Methodist Church in the Glen. She leaves three daughters, Mrs. Howard B. Trezise, Mrs. Fred Mooney, and Miss Ella Hilts, all of Netcong; a sister,
Mrs. Abbie Dann of Morristown; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 2:30 PM at the home. Rev. Henry P. Bowen of the Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Stanhope Union Cemetery".
