Donald Ray Akins, born July 23, 1934, passed away on Aug. 26, 2014. He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Eugene Akins; mother, Della Lee (Hale) Akins; brother, Billie Richard Akins; two sisters, Jerushia Iris (Rushie Akins) Gernt and Mary Ruth Akins; and a beloved aunt, Jane Lee Wyatt. Mr. Akins is survived by his wife, Naomi Ruth (Brookhart) Akins; daughter, Connie Rae (Akins) Smith; son, Duane Crow; nieces, Susan Williams Norris Parsons and Tiffany Norris; brothers, Thomas L. Akins, James Robert Akins and Charles Edward Akins; sisters, Gweldia (Akins) Gannon, Nancy (Akins) Dodgins and Kitty (Akins) Hale; two grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous additional nieces and nephews.
Don was retired from the US Navy as an Aviation Electronics Technician. He traveled worldwide while he served on the USS Enterprise. Additionally, he served in the US Merchant Marines. He was Baptist by faith and was the director of music at his church. He loved his beloved wife of 58 years, his family and his friends. Don will be truly missed by all.
Funeral services will be held today, Aug. 29, with burial in the Akins Cemetery in Winesap, TN.
