Pvt. Enoch "Jimmy" James was born circa 1846 in Franklin County, Alabama to Thomas James (circa 1804-1851) and Mary Polly Bonds (circa 1807-1887) of Georgia. Between 1861 and 1865, Private James served in Company "E" of the 4th Alabama Cavalry, Confederate States Army, also known as "Roddey's" Cavalry during the War of Northern Aggression ("Civil War"). On April 12, 1870, "Jimmy" as he was called, married Adeline "Ada" Sprewell (1853-1879) in in Clarendon, Monroe County, Arkansas. Regrettably, Ada died young on January 24, 1879, at the age of 25, three days after giving birth to their third stillborn child, an infant son. Jimmy died on May 28, 1885 at the age of 39 in Clarendon, Monroe County, Arkansas. He, is buried in an unmarked grave beside Ada and his son at Shady Grove Cemetery in Clarendon, Monroe County, Arkansas. His known surviving children include: Virginia "Jennie" Burton James (July 10, 1871-11 Apr 1953) and Malinda E. James (February 18, 1874-June 30, 1877). Private Enoch James served his country in Company E of the 4th Alabama Calvary along with his older brother, Pvt. Elias Walter James (1836-1917). His other two older brothers, Pvt. William Anderson James (1836-1912) and Pvt. Andrew Jackson James (1844-1902) also saw service in the Confederate States Army during the War of Northern Aggression (1862-2865).
