Son of Henry Blume (birth, May 1842, Hanover, Germany to death, 1919, in or near town of Norwood, now Chicago, Illinois) and Barbara Ehman (birth abt 1851 in Württemberg, Germany to death between 1885 - 1900 in Illinois, in or near town of Norwood, now Chicago).

In 1880 Edward was the oldest child living with his parents on a farm in Maine, Cook, Illinois. Siblings: Diedrich, Cary and Fredrick.

On June 1, 1900, Edward was living with his widowed father Henry on the family farm in Norwood Township, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. His single siblings, Lydia, Carrie, Fred, Idella, Martin and his aunt Minnie were living with him.
On April 18, 1907 he married Hedwig Jessie Joss in Leyden, Cook, Illinois.

In 1910, Edward, his wife and son, Clifford were living on Maple Avenue in Maine, Cook, Illinois in their own home. He was a local teaming shop manager. On September 12, 1918 he reported on his draft registration that he was a self employed coal dealer working as Blume Brothers' Coal Co. and living with his wife at 6721 Olympia, Chicago, Cook, Illinois. On April 13, 1919 his wife Hedwig passed away leaving him with three young children to raise.

In 1920, Edward was the head of a rented home at 6537 Norwood Park Avenue, Chicago Ward 27. In addition to his three children, Clifford, Verna, and LeRoy, his single sisters Lydia and Carrie, and his single aunt Minnie were helping him raise his children.

1930, they are all living in an owned home on Norwood Highway in Chicago. The coal company was lost during the Depression.

In 1935 and 1940 the address of his owned home is listed as North West Highway, Chicago. He was working as a laborer.
