Helen R. Dey, 90, of Atlantic, Iowa, died on Sept. 15, 2000, at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.
Services were held on Sept. 19, 2000, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Walnut, Iowa. Vicar Merlene Ostebee officiated. Interment was at the Fort Calhoun Cemetery.
Helen Rose Dey was born on Aug. 5, 1910, on the family farm near Fort Calhoun to Arthur and Alma (Boettger) Krambeck. She was the oldest of six children in the family.
She attended the Green country school and graduated from Benson High School in Omaha in 1927.
She attended Peru State Teacher's College. She taught country school in Douglas County for 12 years, and also taught in District School 20 and District School 25, which was located across the road from Boys Town.
On Feb. 2, 1940, she was married to Arnold Carlos Dey at St. John's Lutheran Church in Florence.The couple farmed near Elk city for seven years, and then moved to the Krambeck family farm near Fort Calhoun.
While on the farm, Mrs. Dey enjoyed working with her chickens and gathering eggs each day. The couple farmed until 1973, when they retired, and moved to a farm north of Walnut, Iowa. Baking and gardening were always important parts of Mrs. Dey's life.
Mrs. Dey and her husband were founding members of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Walnut. Mrs. Dey was a member of the Walnut Creek Historical Society, the Walnut Federated Garden Club , and her Neighborhood Club.
Mrs. Dey moved to Peace Haven in 1995, and to Salem Lutheran Home in 1999.
Mrs. Dey is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Ardythe and Neal Smith of Walnut, Iowa; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Arthur Krambeck Jr. of Omaha; a sister and brother-in-law, Arline and Charles Kaffenberger of Seattle, Wash.; many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold, and three sisters, Wilhemina McDaniel, June Crisp, and Bernice Peters.
Knutson Funeral Home in Walnut was in charge of arrangements.
