The following is from page 98 of Earl Jacob Carlton's journal. I do not know if it is correct because it happened long before I was born.

Evan Bell spent four years in the US Navy. All of the Bell children were musical. He carried his saxophone with him for the entire four year enlistment, hoping to be chosen for the US Navy band. He never made it.
