The following is a tribute to Lucy (Girdler) Braun, daughter of Josiah William Girdler and Sophia F. (Lay) Girdler:

Just as the cares of the day had ended and the shadows of the night had gathered over the city another soul weary with anguish and agony took its flight across the great frontier. The unconquerable fingers of death touched the brow of our beloved friend and relative, Mrs. Lucy Girdler Braun, born Dec. 8, 1901, near Somerset, Ky., died Jan. 27, 1925, following an operation for appendicitis at the St. Elizabeth Hospital, Covington, Ky. She was twenty-three years, one month, and nineteen days of age. On her last birth anniversary, Dec. 9, 1924, she became the wife and loving companion of the husband she had to leave so soon, Mr. John Braun, Jr., Bromley, Ky. She was a patient sufferer and thru the long watches before death came and banished conscious and pain, she never murmured but calmly awaited the summons. But when the summons came there was no trial of aching years behind but a bright vision of short years, crowded with love, hope, and gladness. She went from life into a land that is fairer than day. It was a short life tragic with pain and burdened with cares. If after all the resurrection be a splendid dream, there is still something beyond the grave that lives. Her husband remained at the bedside constantly hoping to the last that a change for the better would come, and when death came he was crushed and heart-broken. Days before her death she caught a gleam, a foretaste of the beauties and glories that awaited her. At about the age of thirteen she gave her soul to God that she might be ready at any time the call came. She became a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church at that time. Through life she carried a smile, a happy smile that won all hearts. It made friends for her among young and old, and those who had known her all her life realized how fully her bright smile represented the sunshine of her heart. It is sad to give up those whose influence in life would doubtless have been for so much good, yet He who doeth all things well makes no mistakes. The human link snapped asunder on earth, forged anew in Heaven. The grief stricken husband, father, sister, and brother mourn not as one without hope. While the silence of death wraps and chills us at this moment, memories sweet and precious come crowding in. Death is a hard master, he would take from us our dearest and best but he cannot mar memory. There is one thing to be happy for now and that is the land beyond where there is nothing but peace and ......illegible...... all in love.

Mrs. Braun was the daughter of Mr. J.W. Girdler of Pleasant Hill and is remembered here by many. Although she has for the past five years made her home in Ludlow, Ky, and Cincinnati, O, she never forgot to call this her home and often visited. Only last Christmas she and her husband were here with us, and never did we think when we bade her goodbye it was our last.

Besides her father and husband she leaves one sister whom had reared her from an infant, Mrs. Wm. Ashley, one brother, Mr. Mitt Girdler, a small half-sister and brother and her stepmother who was kind and devoted to her. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Braun, Bromley, Ky., conducted by Rev. J.T. Doughtery, pastor of the Ludlow Baptist Church. The floral offerings were many and beautiful showing the love and respect of many friends. The pall bearers were six of her intimate girl friends, Misses Nora Girdler, Marcella Braun, Rose Nagel, Cecelia Kruetzman, Carnetta Shilling, and Emma Free. Miss Free was a bridesmaid at the wedding of Mrs. Braun on Dec. 8th last. Her remains were laid to rest in the beautiful Highland cemetery, Covington, Ky. Those attending the funeral from here were Mr. J.W. Girdler, Mr. Mitt Girdler, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Ashley, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Girdler, Mrs. and Mrs. H.M. Baker, Mrs R.H. Shadoan. The husband and family have the heartfelt sympathy of the many friends in their hour of grief for cheering words for them, and we who are left cannot say"good-bye", but in some brighter clime we will bid our dear Lucy "good morning". A cousin. F.K.B.
