Gould (Goold) was the 3rd of 11 children (3rd son) born of Abel Camp (1729-1821) and his wife Abigail Gould (1733-1819). Gould's siblings were: Joel (1753-1806), Abel (1756-1839), Annis (1762-1766), William (1764-1860), George (b. 1767), Abigail (1769-1770), Major (b. 1771), Annis (1773-1855), Abigail (1776-1776), and Jared (1779-1785).

During the latter part of the Revolutionary War, Gould served 1 tour during a 3 month term of enlistment with his brother Abel in Captain Cocklin's Company, Colonel Wadsworth's Connecticut Militia Regiment. They served at New Haven and other Towns in that vicinity on the sea bays of Connecticut.

Gould married, September 23, 1790 at Tunbridge, Orange County, Vermont, Elizabeth Knox (1771-1844) by whom he had 11 children (5 sons and 6 daughters): born at Tunbridge - Philander (1792-1877); and born at Orange, Orange County, Vermont - Pamela (1793-1852), Mary (1796-1872), Elizabeth (1798-1847), Abel (1801-1890), David G. (1803-1875), Annis (b. 1805); and born in Barre, Orange (now Washington) County, Vermont - Cyrus Clark (1814-1886), and Sarah Ann (1817-1843).

Gould moved from Tunbridge to Orange, Orange County, Vermont where he became one of that town's first settlers in 1793. At the town's organization meeting held on March 9, 1796, he was elected one of three Selectmen and the Town's Treasurer. He moved from Orange to Barre, Orange County, Vermont prior to the taking of the 1810 U.S. Federal Census. Then he was enumerated as the head of a household in Barre with 1 Free White Male of 45 year of age and over, 1 free white male 16 to 25, 2 free white males under 10, 1 free white female 26 to 45, 1 free white female 16 to 26, 2 free white female 10 to 16, and 2 free while females under 10 years of age.
