Helene Agnew, 93, of Middlebury Rd. died on July 3, 2013, while living with her daughter, Jackie, in Crownsville, Maryland.

Helene was a graduate of Watertown High School and Waterbury Hospital School of Nursing. She first worked as an obstetric nurse in Waterbury Hospital and then spent a lifetime career as a florist with her husband, Alexander Jr., and son, AlexanderIII (“Scootie”). Her disposition was as sunny and cheerful as the flowers with which she worked. Her constant smile and kindness are remembered by all. It is no wonder that she was called “Mother” or“Mom” by many of those whose lives she touched.

After her family, Helene’s greatest love was her lifelong home, the Town of Watertown. Her many actions showed her love and dedication to the town, its people, and its heritage. Throughout her life, she was deeply devoted to the First Congregational Church of Watertown in which, over the years, she held several leadership roles including church historian and president of Women’s Fellowship.

Helene’s actions spoke louder than words in her contributions to many organizations, including the Watertown Library Association, the Watertown Historical Society, Naugatuck Valley Genealogy Club, Watertown Art League, and the Girl Scouts of America. Of special note was her membership in the Trumbull-Porter chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, in which she previously served as Chapter Regent and was the state chair of the Junior American Citizens Committee. Out of her concern for the town’s history, she devoted huge efforts to the preservation of the Old Burying Ground by organizing awareness and fundraising events and by successfully pursuing means to sustain and maintain this historic town icon.

In 2007, Helene was recognized for her achievements when the Rotary Club of Watertown presented her the Alexander L. Alves Award which honors a community member who embodies the qualities of outstanding achievement, volunteerism, and service. That award sums up the reasons that she is loved for her devotion to her family, friends, and community.

Helene was predeceased by her husband, Alexander Jr., in 1983, and her son, Alexander III (“Scootie”), in 1986. She is survived by her daughter, Jackie Agnew, of Crownsville, Maryland, two grandchildren, Kelly Medvigy of Catonsville, Maryland and Corey Agnew of Carroll, Maryland, three great grandchildren and the widow of Scootie, Linda Agnew, of The Villages, Florida.

Funeral Services will Be held Friday July 12th at 1:00pm at the First Congregational Church, 40 DeForest St. Watertown. Graveside Services in Evergreen Cemetery, North St Watertown will be held following the post funeral reception at the church at 3:30pm. Friends may call at the Hickcox Funeral Home, 195 Main St Watertown, Thursday evening from 5:00-7:00pm.
