My uncle George I think I have to tell you about next. He was only what you would call a big boy. When the folks moved from Ohio to Michigan he seemed to enjoy the trip and helped good to do the work for there was quite a bit of work to do to get wood and look out for a place to get water, tend to the animals, see that they found food and water. But when the folks got settled and not much for George to do, only a few chores and fish a little. He found out he had cousins in the small town of Allegan, then to Allegan he wanted to go. The folks thought the visit would be good for him so they made it possible for him to go. He was rather reluctant about bidding his mother good bye for he then was the same to her as a baby, so handicapped by being so near sighted. He could not go to school. The teachers did not have the patience with him for he would put his nose in the book and then the teacher would be cross and a word would make George cry but when he got to Allegan he did not have to go to school. He had other cousins that could stay out if they choose to and of course that suited them , Then they could go to the river and fish or go in swimming just as they liked to the things most unnecessary. After uncle George Washington Dexter had been in Allegan two or three months, I think the relatives there were tired of him or thought his visit should be to an end so they wrote to his mother that George was not very well. Uncle Ben Nichols wrote that was grandmother's brother. He said, now Hannah don't worry, we are going to keep the boys from going in swimming so much, then I think they will be all right again. But in a few days here came another letter. George wants to go home where mother is. Then my father (Lucius Barnes) went and got him, found him in bed shaking with the Ague. He had been in Allegan almost three months and been in swimming almost every day till he began to have the Ague. Then so glad to get home to the dear mother (Hannah Dexter) but did not want to hear of Allegan any more.

Son of Horace and Hannah (Nichols) Dexter. His father was born in Connecticut, and his mother in Massachusetts.
