Dorothy Christine Rice, 79, passed away August 20 at Brookings Hospital as a result of complications from cancer. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at Greenwood Cemetery in Brookings, SD. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Dorothy was born April 8, 1935 in Brookings, SD to Jennett (Hillerud) Bauman Parker and Fred Bauman. She graduated from Brookings High School and moved to California where she worked for an insurance company. It was there she met her husband Eugene Rice and they were married October 25, 1957. After their son Michael was born, they moved to Houston. Dorothy worked in a hat factory and cleaned houses. After "Gene" passed away in 1979, she returned to SD and moved to Madison where she also cleaned houses. She moved to Brookings in 1990 to be closer to her son and family. She was very close with her granddaughter, "Jenny" and loved spending time with her.
Dorothy is survived by her son Michael (Becky) Rice and granddaughter Jennifer Rice, all of Brookings, SD; sister, Joyce Cleveland and brother Fred (Jeanine) Bauman, both of Madison, SD; sister in law, Lila Bauman of Brookings, SD and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene, a brother Derald, and her beloved dog, Spunky.
