Caroline Christine Murrel, 97, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at the home she lived in for the last 58 years. She was born on March 14, 1917 in Lake Leelanau, MI the child of Clara and Charles Morio. Caroline was the Salutatorian of the St. Mary's High School class of 1935. After moving to Ann Arbor, Caroline attended an Ann Arbor business school. She applied her education by keeping the books for the family painting business for several decades. Caroline married John Louis Murrel on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1938. Caroline and Louie celebrated 37 years of marriage prior to his death on January 4, 1976. Caroline was preceded in death by her brothers, Willard, Raymond, Louis, and Philip Richard; sisters, Rita Richard, Olivia Grant, Genevieve Poppenger, and Mary Kerr; daughter, Sharon; and her great-granddaughter, Emily Christine. She is survived by brother, Fredrick "Leo" (Judie) Richard and sisters, Dorothy Peer and Esther Hannah. Surviving children and spouses are Roger (Helen), John II (Mary), Richard, Virginia Cloud, Mary Murrel, Linda Pink, Ruth Karden (Stuart), Elizabeth Lockrey (Dennis), Audrey Schwimmer (Paul), and David (Benita). She was blessed with 20 grandchildren: John III, Steven, Jason, Katrina, Charlotte, Jeffrey, Jeremy, Shawn, Christine, Rachel, Jennifer, Devin, Alexander, Eric, Marcus, Victoria, Carlye, Clarissa, Richard and Jaime. She delighted in her 13 great-grandchildren: Manuel, Nathaniel, Hannah, Grace, Caroline, Clayton, Christian, James, Clara, Katelyn, Margaret, Dashiell, and Jacob. Children always held a special place in her heart as demonstrated by the strong bond with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed baking and gardening. She especially loved to care for her dahlias, roses, and vegetable garden. The family will gather for a visitation at Nie Family Funeral Home, 3767 W. Liberty Road, Ann Arbor, MI from 2-4 PM and from 6-8 PM on Sunday, August 24, 2014 with a rosary at 7 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, August 25, 2014 at 10 AM with an hour of visitation prior at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 530 Elizabeth Street, Ann Arbor, MI with Rev. Fr. Todd Koenigsknecht as celebrant. Burial will be at Old St. Patrick's Cemetery, 5671 Whitmore Lake Road, Ann Arbor immediately following. Memorial contributions can be made in her honor to St. Joseph's Indian School, PO Box 326, Chamberlain, SD 57326, or to Grand Traverse Bay Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, 2605 N.W.
