Enlisted in the 9th Regiment Ohio Cavalry for a term of 3 years. He was in Company M, which was basically recruited in Coshocton County. This company was organized in the fall to early winter of 1863. Went in as a private and was mustered out a private on 20 July 1865 in Lexington, North Carolina. The 9th Ohio Cav. saw action basically in Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina.
On 12 October 1875 he enlisted in the 7th U. S. Cavalry. He was a saddler in Company A, commanded by Miles Moylan. He was involved in the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Company A was one of the companies that were with Marcus Reno when they crossed the river, attacking the indian village. In the retreat back across the river Hook was one of the lucky ones and made it to what is now known as Reno Hill where he fought with Reno and Frederick Benteen until the battle was over.
