Allen S. "Judy" Grow Jr.
SHAMOKIN — Allen S. "Judy" Grow Jr., of Shamokin, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Judy was born July 9, 1923, at Geisinger Hospital, to the late Allen S. Grow Sr. and Helen (Tyson) Grow.
Judy graduated from Shamokin High School, Class of 1941. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps March 22, 1943, and began his active service June 5, 1943. He served in the 3rd Marine Division, arguably the toughest battalion in the Marine Corps, as a Marie sharpshooter and combat engineer in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He participated in action against the enemy on Iwo Jima from February to March 1945 and witnessed the historic raising of the American flag on Mount Suribachi.
Following the victory of Iwo Jima, Judy's battalion were the first Americans to occupy Nagasaki following the dropping of the atomic bomb. For his service, he was awarded the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with Battle Star, World War II Victory Medal, Occupation of Japan Service Medal, and the Presidential Unit Citation presented by the 3rd Battalion Marines for excellence in combat. Having attained the rank of sergeant, he was honorably discharged March 28, 1946.
In 2004, Judy was a World War II generation honoree at the National World War II Memorial dedication ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Upon returning to Shamokin after the war, Judy married the love of his life, Irene Klick, May 29, 1948, in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Their marital union spanned 66 years. Judy ran the family plumbing business, Allen S. Grow Sons, for more than 50 years. He was adored by his four daughters, nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union 520 since 1946; a B.P.O. Elks life member, Shamokin-Sunbury; Union Hose Company life member, Coal Township; a member of Ralpho Township Fish and Game Association; Lions Club, Shamokin; Union County Sportsman Club, Millmont, and American Legion Post 73, Shamokin; and a former board member of West End National Bank. At the age of 90, Judy joined the Marine Corps League Black Diamond Detachment 846 and was recognized as the honored veteran to ride on the Rotary's float in the 2014 Shamokin Memorial Day parade.
Judy enjoyed fishing and hunting at Kreb's Cabin in Weikert, even though he never took a fishing rod or gun. His greatest joy was being surrounded by his family.
In addition to his wife, Irene, he is survived by his four daughters, Karen Benedict and her husband, Albie Jr., Andrea Pensyl, Connie Richie and her husband, Barry, and Lisa Grow Bonshock and her husband, Keith; an honorary son, Michael Wheeler; nine grandchildren, Bryan, Michele, Chad, Dana, Billy, Lauren, Lisa, Alek and Kaia; 14 great-grandchildren, Logan, Cameron, Benjamin, Travis, Aiden, Emma, Mikaela, Ava, Samuel, Mason, Cael, Sofie, Tyson and Elaena, which made for one heck of a party at any given opportunity. He is additionally survived by cousins, nieces, nephews and many close family friends.
Judy was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Bob, Glen and Wayne Grow.
Judy epitomized the Greatest Generation. Our Dad, Our Hero, Semper Fidelis!
Stephen A Chowka Funeral Home, 114 N. Shamokin St., Shamokin, had charge of arrangements. Burial with military honors was in All Saints Cemetery, Bear Gap.
