Seven Perlick sisters came to the U.S. from Pomerania (aka "The Pommern"), which was part of Prussia when they were born. The name comes from the Polish for "By the Sea." It became part of the German empire in 1871, and most U.S. records show them as coming from Germany. Although the sisters spoke German, they came from Poganitz (aka Poganice), which is today a part of Poland.

Their parents were Gustav Adolph Perlick (1829-1872) and Caroline Charlotte Friedericke Lull (1833-1869). They had three brothers and another sister who died in infancy in Pomerania.

From oldest to youngest, the sisters were Augusta "Gussie", Emma, Franziska "Sis", Hulda, Bertha, Laura, and Marie.
