Joel "Jay Bird" Abbott, 65 years of age, of Somerset, Kentucky, departed this life on Monday, August 18th, 2014 at the Hospice of Lake Cumberland Jean Waddle Care Center.
Joel was born in Science Hill, Kentucky on April 3rd, 1949, son of Ola Jean Whiles Abbott and the late Janis Abbott. He was a retired delivery sales rep for Dal-R's and attended Pitman Creek Baptist Church.
Joel was survived by his loving wife, Brenda McKinney Abbott of Somerset, Kentucky; his mother, Ola Jean Whiles Abbott of Somerset, Kentucky; three step daughters, whom he considered his own, Pam (and Jesse) Bowman of Somerset, Kentucky, Angie (and Kevin) Bullock of Shopville, Kentucky, and Gina (and Doug) Surber of Eubank, Kentucky; two brothers, Wayne Abbott of Somerset, Kentucky and Truitt Abbott of North Carolina; one sister, Lana Warman of Florida; seven grandchildren, Seth Bowman, Shane Bowman, Adam (and Alecia) Bullock, Anthony Bullock, Sammy Jo Bullock, Carlie Keller, and Evan Surber; one great-granddaughter, Adalyn Bullock; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other family and friends who mourn his passing.
He was preceded in death by his father, Janis Abbott; and one niece, Tammy Abbott.
Visitations were held after 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 21st, 2014 at the Morris & Hislope Funeral Home in Science Hill, Kentucky.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 22nd, 2014 in the Chapel of the Morris & Hislope Funeral Home with Bro. David Carr officiating.
Burial followed in the Science Hill Cemetery.
