Died: Sat., Aug. 23, 2014

Dr. Knox McLeod Broom, Jr. passed peacefully at his home in Greensboro, NC surrounded by his daughters on June 24, 2014. A native of Jackson, MS, he was born on April 23, 1936, to Knox M. Broom, Sr. and Karon Curtis Broom and graduated from Forest Hill High School in 1954. He attended the University of Southern Mississippi where he met his late wife, Margaret Vance Covington, of Waynesboro, MS, whom he married on June 29, 1958. After graduating from USM with bachelor degrees in chemistry and math he attended the University of Arkansas where he earned his MS in physics followed by a Ph.D. in chemistry in 1963. He began his life-long career in the power industry in California with the Atomic Energy Commission, now known as the NRC, and transferred to the Washington DC area with the AEC. In 1967 he began his employment in the private sector with Louisiana Power & Light in New Orleans as a power engineer. He joined Brown & Root in Houston, TX, in 1972 where he continued his career as a nuclear physicist and engineer with instrumental involvement in projects such as the South Texas Nuclear Power Electric Generating Plant, the first nuclear power plant in Texas. While with Brown & Root, he worked on power projects throughout the world.

In 1987, he relocated to Easley, SC, where he joined Daniel International Construction/ Flour Daniel in Greenville, SC, and subsequently Duke Energy/Fluor Daniel Joint Venture in Charlotte, NC, pursuing power generating opportunities in the US and abroad. He was Director of Sales, Energy and Chemicals with Fluor Corp when he retired from full-time employment in 2003 shortly after the passing of his wife, only to resume working as a consultant with Flour Daniel in the engineering and construction group until his final retirement in 2010. Throughout his life he was very fortunate to have developed many life-long friendships and continued to do so during his semi- and full retirement years in Greensboro, NC. He enjoyed decades of golf rounds and card playing with dear friends in Conroe, Easley and Greensboro as well as many years of camaraderie with his gym buddies and “Boys Who Can’t Read” in Greensboro. In his later years he volunteered countless hours at Barnabas Network rebuilding and refinishing furniture to be provided to those who had lost their homes and was an active member of the Rotary Club of Greensboro where he was a Paul Harris Fellow and was awarded the Joseph M. Bryan Rotarian of the Year Award. He was honored to have recently been granted Honorary Lifetime Membership to his Rotary.
