Charles Jenks served in Company C. 18th Indiana Infantry and he was temporarily assigned to Company K. 49th Indiana Infantry in the Civil War.

In the 1850 census of Helt Twp. Vermillion County, IN Charles is listed as 17 years old residing with his parents John 47 and Pamela Jenks 38 and his siblings: Almada 21, Clarenda 14, Naoma 12, Minerva 9, Henry S. 7, Lydia 4, Marietta 1, and their school teacher William P. Haskel. John Jenks the father was listed as owning real estate worth $2000.

He enlisted on Aug 16, 1861 at Indianapolis, IN. in Co. C., 18th Indiana Infantry as a Musician and with them took part in the Battles of Port Gibson, Champion's Hill, Black River Bridge and the Siege and Fall of Vicksburg. He was mustered out on Aug 18, 1864 on expiration of his enlistment.

He married Elizabeth E. Stokesberry on November 22, 1866 in Vermillion County, IN.

He received an Army Invalid Pension beginning on March 11, 1891 and following his death, his wife Elizabeth E. Jenks received an Army Widows Pension beginning on July 18, 1910, at which time she was residing at 312 Sutherland Ave., Paris, IL.

In the 1880 census of Douglas Co., IL Charles is shown as 47 years old, with his wife Eliz E. age 43 and children Cora A. 10, Clara N. 7, and John W. 2.

In the 1910 census of Paris, IL., Charles is shown as 77 born 1833 in IN with wife Eliz E. age 73 born IN., and daughter Clara 37 born IL.
