Cliff Appelget, 74, of Brooklyn Park, Minn., formerly of Benton Harbor, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, December. 13, 2006, in Brooklyn Park from complications resulting from Alzheimer's disease. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Donna Mae Smith, and a son, Mark. Cliff is survived by his wife, Lois; a stepson, Damon, and a stepdaughter, Brita, both in Minnesota; a son, Jeff in Missouri; daughters, Lora and Cindi in Michigan and Indiana; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.Cliff was born April 1, 1932, and had been a longtime Benton Harbor resident until relocating to Minnesota in 1978. He graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1950 and later from Lake Michigan College. After serving in the U.S. Navy and playing basketball on their national championship team, he went to work for Modern Plastics of Benton Harbor for a number of years as well as Univex Looseleaf before relocating to Minnesota. During his many years in the Benton Harbor area, Cliff dedicated his time to high school athletics as a referee for football and basketball throughout Southwestern Michigan. The Fruit Belt Referee Association awarded him for 20-plus years of service and dedication to high school sports.A memorial service is planned for Jan 13, 2007, in Brooklyn Park, Minn. The family is also planning a memorial service to be held at North Shore Memory Gardens in Benton Harbor later in the spring of 2007 for friends and family.
